I can’t believe it has been a couple of weeks since we’ve had a visit with Pippa’s Corner! I can tell you, our absence has not been because our reading has been lacking. No, no, no… Pippa’s love for books has been growing bigger and bigger each day!
We are now to the point where we have a reading hour, books before naptime and books before bedtime – and that’s just when we are reading to her. Pippa is “reading” independently now, too! By “reading”, I do mean she is picking up her books, flipping through the pages, and doing one of the following: making animal sounds, baby gabber, or calling out the letters with the occasional word (sometimes right, most times not). Mind you, this child is not two until next month. I’m kinda proud! Anyway, she does this a lot. Pippa LOVES her books!
Do you know what else Pippa loves? Halloween! Seriously, this child loves the color orange and anything that resembles a jack-o-lantern! She’s such an autumn baby!
During our last visit with Auntie Sherri, Pippa received some pretty spooktacular books and two have made it to her favorites pile. We read these two EVERY DAY – more than once. She loves them. So do I. They are pretty fun books!!
Little Blue Truck’s Halloween
Alice Schertle & Jill McElmurry
HMH Books for Young Readers
Published July 5th 2016
“Beep! Beep! It’s Halloween! Little Blue Truck is picking up his animal friends for a costume party. Lift the flaps in this large, sturdy board book to find out who’s dressed up in each costume! Will Blue wear a costume too? With the delightful rhymes and signature illustration style that made Little Blue Truck a household name, Blue’s new adventure is full of festive costumes, fall colors, and plenty of Halloween fun!” ~via Goodreads
Little Blue Truck’s Halloween is Pippa’s #1 favorite book right now. We read it to her but she knows exactly when to turn the pages and lift the flaps to find out who is hiding under the Halloween costumes. The book has a rhythm to it, making it easy for her to follow along. Plus, Pippa adores books that have animals and animal sounds, so that is a big bonus! What I love about this book is how fun the story is while remaining pretty simple. The illustrations are nice and bright, too! This is our first Little Blue Truck book but it looks like that’s going to have to change. Pippa has already started to point out others when we visit the bookstores!
Room on the Broom
Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler
Published August 27th 2001
“The witch and her cat are happily flying through the sky on a broomstick when the wind picks up and blows away the witch’s hat, then her bow, and then her wand! Luckily, three helpful animals find the missing items, and all they want in return is a ride on the broom. But is there room on the broom for so many friends? And when disaster strikes, will they be able to save the witch from a hungry dragon?” ~via Goodreads
Room on the Broom is one book that I love to read out loud. The rhyming is quick, fun, and tells a fantastic story! This is another book with a fantastic rhythm to it. The illustrations are super playful and well done. I am especially fond of the quirky witch and menacing dragon. As for Pippa? She loves the cat (basically, she loves any cat these days). Greg and I take turns reading in the evening and I have to admit – when this book is the bedtime book, I’m all over it. I want to be the one who gets to read this title. It’s really so much fun! I have a feeling that we will be reading this one, long after Halloween passes!
