When my girlfriends organized my baby shower for Pippa, they already knew that the one thing I really wanted was for her to have a fantastic library. As requested, friends came to the event with a book or two in tow, helping to create a library that is truly, truly wonderful. Thank you. We received so many fantastic books, many that I had never heard of and many that I was already in love with. Some of the books Pippa was able to enjoy right away, some books Pippa can enjoy now, and there are still others that are waiting for her to be just a bit older before she can explore them. We were gifted so many books and we are still making discoveries amongst those pages, nearly 2 years later.
This week, we wanted to share two of Pippa’s bedtime board books that came from our dear friends. While not new, these are books we had never heard of previously but now love because the illustrations are so wildly different and they are just so much fun to read!
All Through My Town
Jean Reidy and Leo Timmers
Bloomsbury USA Childrens
Publication Date: March 5th 2013
Bread is baking
School bus honks its horn”
“Who are the people in your neighborhood? Perfect for the pre-K set, this adorable rhyming text takes a walking tour of your community. The fresh modern art of Leo Timmers features hidden details and a perennial theme reminiscent of Richard Scarry. Little ones will beg to re-read again as they discover the characters who repeat throughout the art in this sweet and vibrant story.” ~via Goodreads
This brightly illustrated book is as much sweet as it is fun. Pippa loves it but so do mommy and daddy! Perhaps it is the Richard Scarry’s likeness that drew me in initially but I truly have an appreciation for each fantastically detailed page and the simple rhymes that accompany you through the town. I am not the only one!! This is a perfect book for little ones, as they can learn about all the things they may see in their very own town. The vivid colors and attention to detail will keep your tot focused throughout story time. This is a sure bedtime favorite but also a great companion on your next adventure into town!
The Napping House
Don Wood and Audrey Wood
HMH Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: September 1st 2000
“Everyone knows the cumulative rhyme “This Is the House That Jack Built,” but The Napping House (1984) is close on its heels in the race for posterity: “And on that granny / there is a child / a dreaming child / on a snoring granny / on a cozy bed / in a napping house, / where everyone is sleeping.” Included in the napping house menagerie is a dozing dog, a snoozing cat, a slumbering mouse, and a wakeful flea who ends up toppling the whole sleep heap with one chomp! Don Wood’s delightfully detailed comical illustrations are bathed in moonlight blues until the sun comes up, then all is color and rainbows and a very awake household. Awards: ALA Notable Children’s Book, New York Times Book Review Best Illustrated Book of the Year, Golden Kite Award winner, California Young Reader Medal winner, Booklist Editors’ Choice” ~via Goodreads
The Napping House is every bit nostalgic and hysterical! This board book is super fun to read but be warned – you might find yourself trying to sing, rather than read this story! Between the fantastic rhythm and outrageous illustrations, The Napping House is sure to leave you and your little ones giggling. This book is an obvious winner for bedtime and naptime in our home. Pippa just loves this book!
