Orion has survived the tunnels of Outpost Five, filled with mutant creatures and dangers around every bend. She has traversed the cordons, exposed to the radiation of the flash curtain and hunted by forces that want her stopped, dead or alive. Now, with Dram by her side, she has made it to the safety of the mountain provinces, where free Conjurors live and practice their craft of manipulating matter.
But Orion’s story is far from over.
With the effects of the flashfall spreading and the might of the protected city of Alara looming, Orion must travel into the hands of her enemies once again. Heart-pounding action and adventure await in this sequel to Flashfall.

We are beyond delighted to welcome Jenny Moyer to A Bookish Abode as she shares her latest work FLASHTIDE (FLASHFALL 2) and how she prepares for a writing session! Oh, and be sure to enter the giveaway below for an amazing FLASHTIDE pack!
A typical writing session for me involves my laptop, coffee, and at least one of two animals snuggling beside me while I type! Writing is a very solitary job, so I’m grateful for Emmy and Juniper who keep me company during long stints of drafting or revision.
I’ve learned that my writing process can vary from book to book, but for the most part, when I’m drafting, I tend to just sit down and freewrite, oftentimes out of order. The way I uncover the story and figure out the characters, is by placing them in a set of circumstances, and exploring that scene by scene. I don’t usually know what’s going to happen ahead of time, and I like giving my characters the opportunity to surprise me, and for the story to evolve organically. This makes for a lot of revision later on, but it’s the process that’s worked for me!
Once I’ve forged my way through a draft, I write all the scenes/chapters on notecards, spread them out in a timeline, and develop a bit of an outline from there. It’s easier for me to see plot holes, or where there needs to be more development, clarification, etc. and then work from there.
I’m very inspired by music, so I always create a playlist of songs that help create the mood of certain scenes. Here are a few of the songs from my FLASHTIDE playlist:
“Torches” X. Ambassadors
“Rise” Katy Perry
“What You Wanted” One Republic
“Breathe Me” Sia
“Say Something” A Great Big World
Since I write fantasy and science fiction, I have to do a considerable amount of “worldbuilding.” I always create visual boards that inspire me in terms of setting and characters. You can check out my pinterest boards here:
One thing that helped me in writing this series, is that I had the unique experience of creating the book trailer while I was in revisions. This helped me think through a lot of additional details—for both the story and setting—and add those in. We filmed in caves, (and a sand quarry for the cordon scenes,) and it was amazing to see my characters come to life like that! My husband is a filmmaker, and he did an amazing job bringing these scenes to life!
I also do a lot of book research as part of my writing process. For the FLASHFALL series, I went caving and learned to climb.
All of these things help me create characters and scenes that I hope resonate with people and draw them in to the books I write.
Thanks for celebrating the release of FLASHTIDE with me! I hope you enjoy reading it!
