When it comes to book challenges, I usually shy away. IF I set out to do a challenge, I tend to keep it as simple as possible. Thus, taking the challenge out of the challenge… What’s the point, right?
Last year, I figured I would really challenge myself and decided to complete my first Goodreads Reading Challenge. I set my goal to 40 books. Now, 40 books was a lot for me, especially when you consider that in the year prior I only read a small handful of books for myself. Two book to be exact. 2. Yup, 40 would be a real challenge.
I am happy to say that I surpassed my goal easily and I had so much fun doing so. So much fun that halfway through the year I was kicking myself for not challenging myself even more! I saw all of these other fantastic challenges that my book buddies were participating in and I so wanted in. But… I didn’t join. I hesitated and procrastinated and the months soared by making it too late to even try.
This year, I am pushing myself a bit more. I’ve set bigger goals and I am participating in more challenges. Challenging challenges! I’ve even created a little challenge of my own because why not!? The challenges I am participating in this year are:
Goodreads Reading Challenge
I’ve already talked a bit about my plans for this challenge in my Holy Smokes, It’s 2018 post. Let me recap… This year I am planning to read at least 100 books. Because I read a lot of books to Pippa and we are exploring so much together, I am going to include the new books that we read in my goal. So, first reads of children’s books will count towards my number. Any re-reads of children’s books do not count.
Oh, and be sure to connect with me on Goodreads, so you can see what I’m reading this year and to share your own reading goals! I love connecting and seeing what you are reading!
POPSUGAR Book Challenge
The POPSUGAR Book Challenge is one that I really wished I had set out to do in 2017, so you could say I am excited for this! There are 40 different reading prompts in this challenge, along with 10 additional advanced prompts. 50 books! What I love most about this challenge in particular is how unique these prompts are: A book set at sea, A book set in the decade you were born, Nordic noir, A book about death or grief, A book with an LGBTQ+ protagonist, etc… Some books will really push me far out of my comfort zone (esp. books dealing with death) and some may help me discover new authors or even genres to fall in love with. Maybe, I will learn something new. Maybe, I will discover something about myself. No doubt I will have fun exploring with this challenge. Also, if you get excited about Goodreads groups, there is one for this POPSUGAR challenge!
Book Riot’s Read Harder Challenge
In it’s 4th year, the Book Riot’s Read Harder challenge includes 24 prompts that will push you to really reach beyond your comfort zone. With prompts like: A book published posthumously, A comic written or illustrated by a person of color, A sci fi novel with a female protagonist by a female author and An assigned book you hated (or never finished) – I just know that I am going to enjoy exploring and will definitely be tapping into worlds I’ve never experienced until now. How exciting!? And yes, there is a Goodreads group for the Book Riot challenge! Maybe you need some accountability friends or motivation? Perhaps, you’d like some ideas for books to read or maybe you have something you want to share with others. This great community is the place to get connected!
Mary Higgins Clark – ALL THE BOOKS
You might think that I am some super fangirl to attempt this final challenge but please, let me assure you, I’m really not. Yes, I have read some books by Mary Higgins Clark and I loved them. That was so long ago, though. I really couldn’t even tell you which ones I actually read and which ones I thought I read… wanted to read… picked up but where did it go… huh. So yeah, I remember loving Mary Higgins Clark’s work and I really just need to be reacquainted. I suppose reading all of her published work would be one way to accomplish the getting reacquainted. Right? Suuuuure. I know there are a lot of books (50+ just in suspense!) and I don’t plan to read just Mary Higgins Clark in this year alone. That would be overkill, even for me. (Did you catch the pun? *wink, wink*) I am giving myself until 2020 to read all of Mary Higgins Clark’s published work. I am planning to read these works in order when possible because I want to observe how her writing style has evolved over time. So yeah… ALL THE BOOKS!!
And that does it – for now. These are the challenges I will be participating in for 2018 and surely I may scoop up some little side challenges here and there but I don’t want to overdo it. I really feel like I can meet the goals I’ve set for myself but not so easily. And isn’t that the point?
What challenges are you excited for? What have you signed up to do this year? Have you participated in any reading challenges in the past that you love so much you are doing them again? Drop me a line and let me know! I love hearing from you! xo
